Disney Q & A Friday: Roller coasters + Halloween Party

It’s Friday! You know what that means! It’s time for another Q&A session. Today’s questions focus on facing some long-standing fears and some tips on how to have a blast at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! Let’s start there, shall we?

Q: My family and I are attending Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party in a few weeks. We want to get the best value for the extra money we spent. Have you ever attended? Please say it was worth it. Any tips on how to party like a pro?

My hubby and I attended MNSSHP (without kids!) a couple of years ago. I can honestly say we had a blast at the party and felt it was worth every cent we paid. Here are a few quick tips to get the most out of your party time.

  • We opted to pass doing any other park that day to save our energy for the party. It goes until midnight and I’m glad we did! A full day at the parks and then the party would be too much for most, I think. But, if you’re hardcore, go for it.
  • Just because the ticket says the party starts at 7pm, you can arrive as early as 4pm with your ticket for Magic Kingdom admission. Walt Disney World doesn’t advertise that fact, but it’s been done for years. You can turn in your ticket to get your special party band and trick or treat bag.
  • Try to eat before 7pm. First, many of the restaurants close during the party and second, we didn’t want to waste a lot of time eating when there were other things to do.
  • Dress up (even if it’s just a little). We didn’t dress up and while I didn’t feel out of place, I wish we would have done something: even matching hats or the like.
  • Make sure you see the Boo to You Parade, especially the opening as the headless horseman makes his infamous ride! You get to see many of the villains, the music is so much fun and it’s fabulous seeing all the characters dressed up in their favorite costumes!
  • Happy Hallowishes is a must-see! There is a special “ghost host” for the event and the fireworks and music come together to make one spooktacular show.
  • Ride lines will be down during parade and fireworks time, so try to catch a later show and take advantage of the shorter lines!
  • Don’t forget to trick or treat trails!

Q: My 8 yo son wants to go on every roller coaster in Walt Disney World—and he wants me to go on with him! I hate roller coasters and haven’t been on one in years! What should I do?

A: From one “ahem” cautious chick to another, I say try at least one. You might be surprised with what you enjoy! I’ve never been a big coaster fan, but Walt Disney World even managed to find some extra magic to get me to try. I recommend you go in the following order, if possible (by park, going from least intensity through most):

Magic Kingdom: Barnstormer, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain and Space Mountain.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Rock n  Roller Coaster featuring Aerosmith and Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Primeval Whirl and then there’s Expedition Everest!

I don’t know if it’s the theming or the fact the highs aren’t too high, but I love the Disney coasters. They are tame compared to other coasters, but still provide some thrills. I have NOT been on Tower of Terror or Primeval Whirl.

I provide first-person perspective about my first upside down coaster experience at DHS. If I can do it, anyone can! Oh, and the picture is worth a few good chuckles, too!
